AI: Growth Story or Single Point of Failure for Your Client Portfolios

AI isn’t just a growth story—it’s a concentration story. The debate isn’t whether AI will drive returns, but whether those returns come packaged with hidden systemic risk.

Markets have rallied on hyperscalers, but the real power sits deeper in the supply chain—and in far fewer hands. Taiwan’s TSMC and Korea’s Samsung and SK Hynix are critical bottlenecks in advanced chips and memory. That dominance creates extraordinary pricing power, but also a single point of failure in a geopolitically sensitive region.

For UK advisers, this raises a sharp question: are portfolios unintentionally overexposed to a narrow set of companies, countries, and technologies? Any disruption—whether geopolitical, regulatory, or operational—could ripple instantly across global markets.

Yet the same scarcity that creates fragility also drives earnings resilience. AI may continue to fuel returns—but only if investors recognise that concentration risk isn’t a side issue. It is the story.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this presentation, you’ll be able to:

One.
Explain the key drivers behind AI-related market concentration and why returns have increasingly been driven by a narrow set of companies and sectors, rather than broad market participation.

Two.
Assess the geopolitical dimensions of AI investment risk, with particular reference to the concentration of critical technology infrastructure in geopolitically sensitive regions, and consider how this might affect portfolio construction decisions.

Three.
Evaluate the tension between the earnings resilience and growth potential that AI investment offers and the concentration and fragility risks that accompany it, in order to have more informed conversations with clients about risk-adjusted positioning.
